A ball spiked by an attacker from near the sideline, the ball goes down the sideline to deep corner. Off-Speed Shots: Attacking the ball so it goes slower and is placed to a spot.

Volleyball Glossary. Ace: A botched serve after which the opponent is awarded a point. Antenna: Vertical rods mounted above the sidelines and close to the edges of the net, and usually used for indoor courts. Approach: Moving quickly toward the net or ball in an attempt to make a play. Assist: Helping a teammate set up a kill.
Back-One: When a volleyball is set quickly or low to the middle hitter or the right side hitter. Back-Two: A high set of the volleyball to the middle or the right side hitter. Bump : A first hit or pass that is used to set an attack. Carry: A fault in which the volleyball is held for too long of time in the player's hands.
Volleyball in its modern form was born in 1895 under the name of Mintonette. It was the creation of William Morgan, a physical education teacher at a YMCA in Massachusetts, USA. On 10 March, 1896, Alfred Halstead changed the name from Mintonette, which he thought was too feminine, to volleyball. The name says literally what players do in the game: volley the ball over the net.

When a player who is standing on the floor and swinging with an open hand to hit the ball over the net, it is usually called a “down ball”. Traditionally a “down ball” means the blockers at the net should not jump and instead stay down on the floor when an opposing player is sending the ball over the net.
DECOY: A move in which the actual spiker of the ball is disguised. This takes the opposing team by surprise. DIG: The act of reaching a ball spiked by the opponents and passing it to a teammate. DOUBLE HIT: An illegal move that implies that the same player has touched the ball twice in succession.
